The Wallace A. Bacon Lifetime Teaching Excellence Award recognizes outstanding teaching by retired NCA members from any grade level from kindergarten through graduate school; NCA members who are not currently engaged in full-time teaching; and/or NCA members who have demonstrated a long term commitment to teaching. The recipient receives a plaque and will serve on the award selection committee the following year.

Community College Outstanding Educator Award

The Community College Outstanding Educator Award recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding contribution teaching at a community college. NCA members who have made outstanding contributions to education at community colleges and who exemplify excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service to the speech communication profession.
Nominees must have a minimum of five years teaching experience at a community college and must be teaching at a community college at the time of nomination. The recipient is presented with a plaque and a cash award from the Community College Award Fund.

Donald H. Ecroyd Award for Outstanding Teaching in Higher Education
The Donald H. Ecroyd Award for Outstanding Teaching in Higher Education is given to honor an NCA member who exemplifies superlative teaching in higher education. Nominees must hold a master’s degree or higher in the communication discipline; must hold a full-time teaching assignment at an institute of higher education at the time of nomination; and must have a superlative teaching record. The recipient of the award will receive a plaque and a cash award from the Donald H. Ecroyd Award Fund and will serve on the award selection committee the following year.

Bernard J. Brommel Award for Outstanding Scholarship or Distinguished Service in Family Communication
The Bernard J. Brommel Award for Outstanding Scholarship or Distinguished Service recognizes outstanding scholarship or distinguished service in family communication. Contribution to the area of family communication may include research published in scholarly publications or leadership in instructional areas. Scholarship is broadly defined to include the spectrum of scholarly writing found in articles published in any NCA journal or by NCA members publishing in major research journals sponsored by other associations or organizations, or in book or monograph form. This award can also be given to someone who has made an outstanding contribution over a period of years to family communication through leadership, teaching, or promoting the area of family communication at the local, regional, or national level. The award could also be given to someone who combines both scholarly contributions and instructional leadership.
The recipient will receive a plaque and a cash award from the Bernard J. Brommel Award Fund.

Donald P. Cushman Memorial Award
The Donald P. Cushman Memorial Award recognizes excellence in honoring the top-ranked student-authored paper from any unit that competitively ranks papers for programming at the NCA annual convention.
Nominations are submitted by the program chair/planner of each unit that competitively ranks student-authored papers. Planners are encouraged to submit their unit’s top student paper. Units need not give a unit-based top student paper award to be eligible to submit a nominee.
The Cushman Award Committee collects the top student papers from NCA units that are then reviewed in competition with each other.

Douglas W. Ehninger Rhetorical Scholar Award

The Douglas W. Ehninger Award honors distinguished honor scholars who have executed research programs in rhetorical theory, rhetorical criticism or public address studies. The award is given to a person who, through multiple publications and presentations around a rhetorical topic or theme, demonstrates intellectual creativity, perseverance, and impact on academic communities.

The Golden Anniversary Monograph Award recognizes the most outstanding scholarly monograph published during the previous calendar year. Monographs or articles may be in any of the areas of the communication arts and sciences.

James L. Golden Outstanding Student Essay in Rhetoric Award
The James L. Golden Award is open to original essays focusing on the history, theory or criticism of rhetoric both from undergraduates and from graduate students who, at the time of submission, have not been awarded the M.A. degree.
The outstanding essayist not only will receive recognition at the NCA Awards Event but will deliver the paper in a session at the 2012 annual conference. Submission of the paper will be taken as agreement to attend the convention. Travel support will be extended to the author of the winning essay (or senior author, in the case of a joint essay). Recognition will also be given to a Laureate group of top-rated papers.
Essays should be of a length not greater than 20 pages of double-spaced text in 12-point font (not including endnotes) with author-identification information detachable. Essays may have been presented orally prior to submission but may not have been previously published. No more than one essay may be submitted as a solely authored or co-authored essay in a given year by a particular individual; in the case of multiple authors, all authors of record must be students; award recognition shall be given to multiple authors and the prize stipend shall be divided between or among authors; however, travel support will be provided for only the first author.
Essays will be read by a panel of three judges and will be evaluated for their contribution to the understanding of rhetorical process and outcomes, for excellence of conception and grounding, for weight of argument, strength of evidence, and eloquence of expression.
Essays must be supported by a letter of nomination from a faculty member that may be sent separately.

Franklyn S. Haiman Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Freedom of Expression

Mark L. Knapp Award in Interpersonal Communication
The Mark L. Knapp Award in Interpersonal Communication recognizes career contributions to the study of interpersonal communication. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant scholarly contributions to the study of interaction and/or relational processes. This recipient will also have contributed to the quality of interpersonal communication through active involvement in the discipline, significant mentoring of students, and/or public service focused on interpersonal communication.

The criteria to be used in selection of the recipient include (1) overall contribution to scholarship in interpersonal communication, (2) importance of that work in extending/altering our understanding of interpersonal communication processes and outcomes, (3) the quality of the work he or she has contributed, (4) the time span of the contributions, and (5) the ways in which the person has worked to practice effective interpersonal communication through mentoring, teaching, public work, and/or service. Stephen E. Lucas Debut Publication Award
The Stephen E. Lucas Debut Publication Award seeks to encourage and reward new scholars in the communication discipline. It aims to identify and hold up for praise a contribution to the discipline by an author or authors publishing their first scholarly book or essay.
Scholars who have not previously received publication credit as an author or co-author of a refereed book, book chapter, or journal article (including articles in electronic-only journals) may submit their work for the Lucas Debut Publication Award. Essays published in conference proceedings are not eligible for this award. To be eligible, a work must have been published during the previous calendar year.
Book reviews and encyclopedia entries will not be counted as publications with regard to authors’ eligibility for this award. Authors who meet the eligibility criteria can be at any level of professional development, from undergraduate students to full professors. All authors of the submitted work must meet the eligibility criteria.
Criteria for evaluation of the work focus on its intellectual contributions, development of ideas and arguments, and clarity and sophistication in expression.

Gerald R. Miller Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Awards
The Gerald R. Miller Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Awards program recognizes new scholars who have recently completed their dissertation. The Selection Committee will evaluate nominations and select the most outstanding dissertations completed in the field during the previous academic year (from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011). Up to three awards may be given in any year.
Nominations must be sent to the selection committee chair (Dr. Lawrence Frey) by a faculty member from the department in which the dissertation was completed.
This year, the review committee will evaluate the nominated dissertations through a process of blind review. As a result, there will be a few changes in the method of submitting materials. All material should be submitted as MS Word files, such that identifiers may be removed. In writing nominating letters, the writer should omit self-references, department references, and the name and affiliation of the dissertation’s author.
The nomination package must consist of the following material (copies will not be returned):
- A cover letter written by the dissertation advisor or department chair, including complete and current contact information for the nominee.
- One copy of a 500-word (maximum) abstract of the dissertation.
- One copy of an article-length manuscript derived from the dissertation (30 double-spaced pages maximum, not counting tables, references, and appendices) or one selection from the dissertation that the applicant believes to be most representative of the dissertation (30 double-spaced pages maximum, not counting tables, references, and appendices).
- One complete copy of the dissertation. MS Word files of the entire dissertation will be accepted for sake of space preservation. If the entire dissertation cannot be transmitted as a single file attachment, a copy saved to CD can be mailed to Dr. Frey at the address provided below.
No coauthored materials will be considered, and no bound copies of the dissertation should be submitted because none of the materials will be returned to the nominees.

The recipient of the award will receive a plaque and a grant-in-aid from the Wallace Award Fund.

Charles H. Woolbert Research Award
The Charles H. Woolbert Research Award recognizes a journal article or book chapter that has stood the test of time and has become a stimulus for new conceptualizations of communication phenomena. When first published, the article or chapter to be honored may well not have been seen to be as heuristic as it later becomes. Thus, the award will be reserved for an article which at the time of the award is in its tenth through fifteenth year in print and which has not previously received an NCA-sponsored award. The recipient will receive a plaque in the year it is awarded. A panel at the annual convention about the recipient(s)’ scholarship will be in the following year.
The best submissions are original scholarship published in NCA journals.

The award will be presented to the person judged to have made the greatest contribution to the association and to the profession during her or his career. The recipient will receive a plaque.
Nominations must be sent to the chair of the Professional Service Awards Committee by someone well acquainted with the nominee’s qualifications.
Self-nominations are encouraged.
The nomination must include the following material (copies will not be returned):
- a cover letter stating why the person should be recognized by the association for distinguished service to NCA and to the profession,
- the nominee’s vita,
- letters of recommendation from three persons familiar with the nominee’s qualifications.

Robert J. Kibler Memorial Award
The Robert J. Kibler Memorial Award recognizes NCA members who have demonstrated dedication to excellence, commitment to the profession, concern for others, vision of what could be, acceptance of diversity, and forthrightness.
Nominations must be sent to the Professional Service Award Committee Chair by someone well acquainted with the nominee’s qualifications.
Self-nominations are encouraged.
The nomination must include the following material (copies will not be returned):
- a cover letter stating why the person should be recognized with the Kibler Award
- the nominee’s vita
- letters of recommendation from up to three persons familiar with the nominee’s qualifications.
